SOLD Dec 29 2001: 1988 MR2 Supercharged. I ordered a new MR2 Spyder at that time. It took 2 months and 2 dealers to get it (the first one dropped the ball twice, so I moved on and the next one got it for me in 2 weeks). Here are some pictures of mine taken January 1, 2003. I've had it about 9 months and it has over 10k miles on it already.

Here are some pictures of the '88 before it sold:

I purchased it with 50k miles on it and it now has 109k. The following repairs have been made during that time by an expert Toyota Mechanic / ASE Instructor:

  • Sep 1998: Freon Recharge, Alternator Replaced, $472
  • Jan 1999: Tune Up (Valve Cover Gasket, Spark Plugs, Rotor, Distributor Cap, Spark Plugs Wires, Air Filter, Fuel Filter replacement), $492
  • Apr 1999: Replace Harmonic Balancer, $604
  • Dec 1999: Replace Crankshaft, Pulley, Main and Rod Bearings, Gaskets (a worn crankshaft lobe was causing harmonic balancers to wear out quickly), Clutch Replacement per manual-recommended mileage, $3185
  • Mar 2000: Replace EGR valve, $289
  • Mar 2000: Replace Struts and Strut Mounts, $331
  • Jun 2000: Major Air Conditioning (Compressor, Comp. Clutch, Drier/Accumulator Replaced), Major Brakes (Front Calipers, Brake Pads, Hoses, Rotors Replaced), $1502

Besides all this mechanical pampering, it's also been garage-kept and hand-washed since June 2000 ...

So, what's wrong with it? Well, it currently needs or would benefit from the following, which will all be done over the next 3 months if no one buys it (and the price will increase as a result):

  • Needs: Rear Struts Replacement, $350
  • Needs: Supercharger Oil Changed Again (manual says every 60k miles)
  • For the perfectionist: Engine cover (rear hood) repainted (someone keyed it in a parking lot I think)
  • For the perfectionist: Driver's door resurfaced and repainted (small parking lot dings)
  • For the perfectionist: Driver's side rear quarter panel removed, resurfaced and repainted (small parking lot dings)
  • For the perfectionist: Rear Bumper Replaced (parking lot anomolies, see picture above)
